Sinfonia Viva Share Christmas Music Magic

A brass quintet from Derby-based Sinfonia Viva – the East Midlands’ award-winning professional orchestra – has performed two outdoor concerts of Christmas favourites in Ilkeston and Derby.

The concerts, for care home residents and staff, aimed to help everyone get in the Christmas spirit despite the ongoing pandemic.

The musicians first performed outside The Red House in Wharncliffe Road, Ilkeston, for staff and residents. They then travelled to Parkland View, the extra-care housing facility managed by Derby Homes on behalf of Derby City Council, where the musicians performed in the courtyard for around 100 staff and residents.

The 45-minute concerts featured a programme of Christmas favourites, traditional carols, golden classics and festive pop hits.

Sinfonia Viva chief executive Peter Helps said: “Having concentrated on virtual performances since March, our brass players were very excited to return to live performance – albeit outdoors and very much at a distance from the audience.

“We hope that the lively programme had something for everyone to enjoy and added some much-needed Christmas cheer at what continues to be a challenging time for staff and residents requiring additional support and care.”

Gaynor Sladen, Extra Care Manager at Parkland View, said: “We have obviously had to cancel our usual busy Christmas entertainment programme because of the pandemic, so we were very grateful to Sinfonia Viva for giving us this special performance from our courtyard.

“It’s been a very tough year for all the staff and residents, so some Christmas cheer and positivity was very welcomed by us all.”
