Retail winners revealed

After a competitive pitch process, the winners of the 2020 Hatch initiative at the Derby Centre have been announced.

Two local businesses have secured retail space in time for a Christmas opening - emerging jewellery designer-maker Eve Coffey, as well as clay-modelling workshop JumpingCLAY.

Speaking about the competition, Adam Tamsett, general manager at the Derby Centre said: “We had such success with the Hatch initiative last year, we were certain that we wanted to bring it back again and support more local businesses, giving them the opportunity to grow in Derby’s premium shopping destination."

This is the second time that the centre has run the initiative, following the success of last year’s competition which saw local businesses Bondholder Project D, Design 44 and Solesmith open at the centre last summer. Following the initial six weeks, both Project D and Design 44 chose to stay on in the Derby Centre as they proved such a hit with visitors.

One of this year's winner, Eve, started her business after leaving university this summer. ‘Eve Coff Creates’ is a one-woman small business that specialises in lovingly handcrafted, one of a kind, and sustainably sourced resin jewellery. Eve will join the centre in November, offering visitors the chance to buy a unique, hand-made piece of jewellery for someone special this Christmas.

Adam said: “Eve truly represents what the competition is all about, we wanted to support her aspiring start up business and offer her a space to operate and sell from in the lead up to Christmas."

The other winner, JumpingCLAY, provides fun and immersive family workshop experiences, with a focus on learning through play, as well as selling modelling kits. Run by Derbyshire locals Katie Rogers and Sarah Walters, the new store will offer families a place to make everything from dinosaurs to butterflies in vibrant, multi-coloured clay that can be taken home and treasured forever.

Adam added: “The JumpingCLAY team really impressed us with their experience at their existing location at Markeaton Park and we feel that their store will bring something new and exciting into the centre, where families can join a workshop to learn a crafty new skill as well as buying kits so they can keep on having fun at home.

“The Hatch initiative is a great way for small, growing brands to introduce themselves to visitors to the Derby Centre and we look forward to welcoming them soon.”
