Over 80 Fringe Acts Already Entered!

With still five weeks to go before the final deadline for entries, the Fringe already has over 80 fantastic acts signed up and there is still time to take advantage of an early entry discount, which is available until the end of March.

The Fringe prides itself on the variety of its acts, and this year it is more diverse than ever. With music currently the largest category the Fringe is offering everything from rocking blues to opera, and everything in between. Highlights include Dale Storr, winner of the Buxton Fringe Solo Musician in 2015 award, with his smokin' hot New Orleans blues and boogie, The Dodo Street band, bringing their Last Word in Celtic Gypsy Klezmer, Finnish songs from Angels of the North, Enkelit, the return of the Fringe Award-winning Cheshire Chamber Collective, Ukrainian pianist Dinara Klinton, restaurant critic and jazz pianist Jay Rayner and his quartet, and the acclaimed City of Manchester Opera.

The Comedy section welcomes shows including Channel 4’s The Last Leg writer, Australian Adam Vincent, with his How Not To Kill Yourself When Living in the Suburbs, and Lovehard’s award-winning Murdered by Murder featuring a live score by Nick Charlesworth. Theatre ranges from civil rights drama Call Mr Robeson from Grist To the Mill Productions, to Butterfly’s Alice In Wonderland - Underground at Poole’s Cavern. Shakespeare is re-imagined by inamoment theatre’s with its one-man King Lear, and by Edward Day, who has come up with a video game-inspired Super Hamlet 64: Parody DLC. Spoken Word is another intriguing category with events including Heading for the Hills from Peter and Gillian Byrom-Smith combining poetry and music in one nature-themed show.

There is also a range of Visual Arts exhibitions and activities with Burbage Art Group’s newly expanded 2017 Art Exhibition and Peak District Artisans’ massive Great Dome Art Fair plus High Peak Artists, The Green Man Gallery, artist Louise Jannetta and more. Family events range from Opera North Youth Company’s Dr Ferret’s Bad Medicine Roadshow to High Peak Magic Society’s Evening of Close-Up and Stage Magic. Children will also enjoy family-friendly events elsewhere in the programme such as the scarecrow trails, dog shows and more at the week-long Chelmorton Festival. Throughout the Fringe there is a host of free events that anyone can enjoy, from the famous Fringe at Five which presents the best of the Fringe each evening, to The Shakespeare Juke Box, which encourages audiences to pick their favourite Shakespeare scene, and the magnificent Day of Dance, which last year saw Morris dancers from across England descend on Buxton.

The entries so far clearly indicate that the Buxton Fringe 2017, will once again fill Buxton and the surrounding areas with live entertainment, excitement colour and fun. Keith Savage, chair of the Fringe, adds: “We have about half of the final programme so far – but already it looks like Buxton Fringe 2017 is going to be memorable. Among the ‘new’ shows is The Boy Who Grew Wings, which is set among the trees at Grinlow and includes aerial acrobats – surely one for all the family? We also have a brand new venue – The Rotunda – a 130-seat blue marquee that will catch the eye located on The Old Bowling Green in the Pavilion Gardens. Some top quality drama and comedy is booked there.”

This year's Fringe runs from Wednesday 5 to Sunday July 23 with the final deadline for the printed programme being Sunday April 16. Full details of how to enter are on the Fringe website. The printed programme will be distributed in Buxton and beyond from the beginning of June and launched at a special party at The Green Man Gallery, Buxton on Saturday June 3rd - all welcome.

The Fringe is grateful to all its venues around the town and beyond, including the spectacular Buxton Dome, home of the Fringe's sponsor and close partner, The University of Derby. For more information about what’s on and how to take part, please visit www.buxtonfringe.org.uk.
