New exhibition Kimchi and Chips 'Line Segments Space' in December and January 2018

QUAD in Derby presents the first UK showing of a mesmerising and immersive new exhibition in December. The installation Line Segments Space, by acclaimed Seoul-based artist and technology duo Kimchi and Chips, comprises of an architectural web of threads spanning the main QUAD Gallery space.

In Line Segments Space, dynamic imaginary forms are articulated into physical volume by the material of this thread, and the semi-material of the light, the visual gravity of the filaments occupying the space between. It hangs, abstract and undefined, a set of thin positive elements segmenting the dark negative space between. The installation includes a specially designed soundtrack by Junghoon Pi. The work references Picasso’s light painting and Reticuláreas of Gego, whose work offers a contemplation of the material and immaterial, time and space, origin and encounter and art and technology.

Kimchi and Chips is a Seoul based art studio founded by Elliot Woods (UK) and Mimi Son (South Korea). The studio creates actions which superimpose material and immaterial modes of existence, suggesting new technical and artistic attitudes. These actions actualise fictional realities as physical experiences, often employing digital light and computation to manipulate physical space. QUAD is also pleased to announce that Kimchi and Chips, artists Mimi Son and Elliot Woods, will be QUAD’s 2018 Digital Fellows. Their fellowship includes the exhibition Line Segments Space, a short residency in QUAD Artist Studio plus talks and advice sessions.

In the corridor spaces, QUAD presents newly commissioned work by General Practice, a multi-disciplinary artist collective living and working from Lincoln.  Produced during a twelve week residency, the exhibition Manifold is a series of new artworks from a range of disciplines which have taken inspiration from the geography and mythology of the vast and varied National Park, with work by artists: Ellen Brady, Nathan Baxter, Nick Simpson, Rob Britt, Ross Oliver and Michelle Forrest-Beckett.

The exhibition launch of Line Segments Space by Kimchi and Chips in QUAD Gallery, and General Practice in QUAD Extra Gallery Spaces takes place in QUAD on Friday 8th December from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and is free to attend.
