Markeaton Park is recognised as one of the UK’s very best green spaces

Derby’s Markeaton Park has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best parks in the world. Markeaton Park joins five other green spaces awarded recognition in Derby.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Markeaton Park is Derby’s most visited park and is one of the most popular attractions in the East Midlands. It offers a place to escape from day to day living and city life and experience a little bit of countryside on Derby’s doorstep. Markeaton Park boasts excellent visitor facilities with Mundy Play Centre, The Orangery Café, Craft Village, and sporting facilities including tennis courts, footgolf, pitch and putt and crazy golf.

Markeaton Park is a fun day out for the whole family, with Mundy Play Centre’s free and fun activities, and great walks for people of every age. Markeaton Park is host to a range of events throughout the year including Derby LIVE’s Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season, craft fairs, charity runs such as Race for Life, and Family Festivities at Christmas.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the third year running. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Markeaton Park to such a high standard.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”

Derby Parks is also celebrating the achievement of Green Flag Community Awards for Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve and Chellaston Brickworks. Derby Parks awaits results for a further six Community Awards that have been submitted this year. Derby has over 300 parks and open spaces, jam-packed with things to do as a family, opportunities to get healthy and plenty of fun events.

Derby Parks will be raising their Green Flags at the free Superhero Picnic in the Park Love Park events at Markeaton Park on Tuesday 31 July at 12 noon, at Chaddesden Park on Wednesday 1 August at 12 noon and Darley Park on Thursday 1 August at 12 noon. To celebrate these award-winning parks Derby Parks will be running free events between 11am and 3pm on all three days, with many local businesses and charities in attendance and prizes for the best dressed superhero!
