Joel Purnell - saxophonist Peak Jazz, 7th July 2017 @ 8pm

If you've been part of the audience at Chesterfield Jazz Club, you might have seen the wonderful Joel Purnell play his saxophone. It's an unusual saxophone in that Joel has innovated a stand for it instead of the usual neck strap - finding it more comfortable.

He's just as innovative when playing said saxophone too!

This from Joel's own Biography:
With a growing international profile, saxophonist and composer Joel Purnell is acknowledged as one of the UK’s most respected and exciting contemporary jazz musicians and educators. Purnell’s latest album ‘Red Shift’ won international critical acclaim, Jazzwise Magazine portraying his style as “reminiscent of John Coltrane”, whilst The Guardian & Jazz UK describe him as “a muscular, assertive saxophonist whose fluent solos show a strong sense of direction”, and though “a subtle tone-colourist on ballads”, Purnell also demonstrates “the kind of attacking, melodically twisting approach that shows how powerfully he has absorbed the legacy of Michael Brecker”.

As one of the most sought after musicians and jazz educators in the UK, Joel Purnell is highly regarded in the educational arena by both music academics and students alike and was recently nominated as ‘Jazz Educator of the Year’ in the Jazz Yorkshire Awards. Academically, Joel has held the post of Principal Lecturer in Jazz Specialist Studies at Leeds College Of Music since 2000 and also teaches on the faculties of York & Durham Universities. Outside his institutional commitments, Joel also delivers private tuition, workshops and masterclasses in Saxophone Technique, Performance, Jazz Improvisation and Harmony throughout the UK.
