Hayfield Singers’ Christmas Concert

Hayfield Singers are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous American composer, Leonard Bernstein, at their Christmas concert, which will be held at St Matthews Church, Hayfield, on Sunday 9th December at 7.30pm.

Among other choral arrangements the choir will perform Bernstein’s ‘Chichester Psalms’, which were commissioned for the 1965 Southern Cathedral’s Festival at Chichester Cathedral.

Musical Director, Simon Mercer, said: “For many people Bernstein is known as the composer of the score for ‘West Side Story’ but he was an amazingly talented musician, conductor and composer who straddled popular and classical music.  The ‘Chichester Psalms’ are an intriguing and challenging composition which meld classical and modern choral singing.”

The choir will also sing an assortment of carols as well as the Christmas story by Finzi , ‘In Terra Pax’.  They will be supported by young soloists: Mia Serracino-Inglott (mezzo-soprano) and Richard Strivens (baritone), as well as professional musicians: Roger Briscoe (organ), Eleanor Hudson (harp), Cloe and Jon Gregory (percussion).

Tickets for the concert are available in advance from choir members or Hayfield Pharmacy at £10 for an unrestricted view. Restricted-view tickets at £8, plus any unsold £10 tickets, will be available on the night from 7pm.
