Great Northern Running Event - Sunday March 5th

Great Northern Running Event - Sunday March 5th

The date for the next annual Great Northern Running Event has been confirmed as Sunday March 5, 2017 - organised again by Mickleover Cricket Club and Derby-based HUUB Events.

The event, which last year attracted nearly 500 runners of all ages, includes a half marathon (21k) a 10k run and a 2k family fun run.

It is named after and takes part along part of the disused Great Northern railway line in Mickleover.

The route for the half marathon and 10k also takes in the quiet country lanes between Mickleover and Hilton before returning back to the finish line opposite the Great Northern pub.

The half marathon and 10k will be chip timed with prizes awarded to the first three male and female competitors across the line as well as top vets in each age category.

All finishers of the 10k and half marathon will receive a T-shirt and medal and everyone taking part in the 2k will receive a medal to mark their achievements.

Race HQ is based at Mickleover Sports Club, the home of Mickleover Cricket Club, where there will be free car parking, toilets, changing facilities and refreshments.

Mickleover Cricket Club committee member Stuart Walker said:  “We were delighted with the turnout at last year’s Great Northern which was the biggest so far.

“The people of Mickleover and the wider running community really get behind this event and I hope that we have even more entrants this year.

“There is always a great atmosphere at this event and we all gather back at the clubhouse for a warm drink and something to eat before heading home to enjoy the rest of the weekend.”

Claire Duffin, Race Director at HUUB Events, continued: “The Great Northern is timed to give people something to aim for when setting New Year fitness goals.  The half marathon is also perfectly timed to fit in with training plans for those who are undertaking a spring marathon.

“Last year’s event was a great success and we look forward to welcoming people back and newcomers to this popular event in March.”
