Get Ready for the Big 1

Prepare for a fun-filled day for the whole family, when The Big 1 at Chaddesden Park returns this Sunday 4 June, 11am – 5.00pm.

Organised by Chaddesden Partnership Group in association with Derby LIVE, this year’s The BIG 1 at Chaddesden Park promises a day of family favourites that guarantee a great day out for everyone.

Mayor of the City of Derby, Linda Winter said “Every year this carnival attracts hundreds of people to enjoy the fun of the fair. This year’s Big 1 is sure to be another unforgettable day, filled with family-friendly events and entertainment all in the beautiful surroundings of Chaddesden Park.”

Returning this year are the fantastic Charity Fun Dog Show Arena, the Dance Arena and the ever popular International Food Court.

With plenty of different categories to include every type of man’s best friend the Dog Show Arena is one not to be missed. Competitions are listed under three main categories, cute, command and quirky. With entries including best fancy dress, waggliest tail, best biscuit catcher and best lookalike.

In between entries there will be live music and additional performances from local choirs Sing for your Supper and Invisible Friends. As well as three tug of war contests held throughout the day which everyone is encouraged to join. Those wanting to get involved in the events of the day can register their interest at the Sporting Communities bus.

Over at the Dance Arena local dance troupes will be performing throughout the day, with a huge range of styles covered from street dance and cheerleading through to traditional Irish and Jazz Hip-hop dancing.

An array of food and drink will be on offer at the International Food Court, including a carvery, Caribbean barbeque, hotdogs, burgers and the classic fish and chips. At the heart of Chaddesden Park the Community Café will also be open as usual with a varied selection of hot and cold refreshments.

The park will be filled with stalls selling books, sweets, handmade crafts and jewellery, so everyone can pick up a memento of the day. These will sit alongside live animal stalls and those from a number of different groups and charities fundraising with classics such as tombola’s and handing out information. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will be bringing their fire engine along and providing a number of exhibitions and demonstrations.

At 2.45pm The Rock of all Ages choir will also be giving a very special performance outside the The Age UK Chaddesden Park Centre, which will be open all day offering a selection of health, wellbeing, social and day care activities.

Carnival-goers can take their fill of the classic carnival activities, such as hook-a-duck and face-painting before trying their hand at some events to get the blood pumping. Aspire Wrestling will be taking place in the ring, whilst across the way people can try their hand at medieval archery and zorbing. The kids won’t be left out as the inflatable area will be filled with some exciting rides such as the slide, pool and paddle cars.

The Big 1’s annual fun fair will be open from Thursday to Sunday with all the classic, scary and thrill-inducing rides. Rides will be open Thursday 1 June until Saturday 3 June, 2pm – 10pm and 10am – 5.30pm on Sunday 4 June.
