Fusion of Circus, Dance and Theatre as Joli Vyann return to Déda

Déda are excited to welcome the return of performance company, Joli Vyann, with their brand new show ‘ANIMA’ on Thursday 21 November at 7.30pm. Joli Vyann is renowned for presenting an innovative fusion of circus, dance and theatre, blurring the boundaries of dance and circus skills.

ANIMA explores the simple act of breathing in all its forms and how it connects us all. Featuring a live musician and using dance, circus, voice and wind instruments, breath becomes the soundscape for this stunning performance.

Highlighting Joli Vyann’s unique blend of dance and acrobatics, the highly acclaimed performance has won rave reviews. The Stage reviewed it as a “lyrical acro-balance, compellingly laced with gentle irony and a darker side”. The Herald called it “a perceptive, superbly delivered show”.

Ex-stuntman Jan Patzke and ex-gymnast Olivia Quayle are the dynamic duo behind the company. Using exciting hand-to-hand dance and acrobatics, they explore how breath affects our emotions, our physicality and our very being.

Jan and Olivia said “ANIMA is something that feels very personal to us, and our research into it has led us on a rollercoaster journey! …We wanted this show to be inspired physically by our previous shows and to further our style of relaxed acrobatics with dance.

“Previously our choreography has been highly dependent upon the way we breathe and when we breathe. We knew we could explore this further and thus ANIMA was born.”

Starting with martial arts at the age of 10, Jan trained in different styles for 15 years. After some experiences in the stuntman business, he made his way into circus and sports acrobatics, participating in several national and international competitions.

Olivia trained and competed in artistic gymnastics for 15 years before making a natural transition into dance. Graduating with a BA Hons degree in Sports Science, Dance and English Literature from Loughbough University, Olivia has worked with contemporary dance and circus companies all over the world, including Maresa von Stockert, Fleur Darkin, and Motionhouse.
