Fun for EVERYONE – FIGMENT Derby Festival returns this summer

Have you ever felt inspired to try something different, creative or new? Are you an artist, writer, photographer, dancer, maker, musician, or just someone who wants to share an experience with your city? Derby Museums wants to hear from you!

FIGMENT Derby returns to The Silk Mill and Cathedral Green on Saturday 19 August from 11am-5pm. FIGMENT Derby will be a free participatory event full of artistic playfulness and creative energy.

The FIGMENT movement began on Governors Island in New York in July 2007. Since then hundreds of thousands of people across the world have engaged in events to celebrate creativity and interactive art.

The aim of the event is to bring artists and volunteers together to test their most creative, innovative or challenging projects and share their experiences with the people of Derby, encouraging people not just to look at their work but to take an active part.

Last year, the first FIGMENT in Europe took place in Derby at The Silk Mill, welcoming around 800 visitors, artists and supporters.

This year’s Volunteer Producer, Mark Hornsey runs his own theatre company, Babbling Vagabonds and is working with the team at Derby Silk Mill to establish FIGMENT in Derby.

Mark is keen to meet with creative people across Derby and Derbyshire who want to share something special with the city and offer visitors an interactive experience.

He said: “This isn’t an event for paid artists to just display their pieces and people to walk around and look at it.

“We want to see painters who invite visitors to alter and enhance their painting and sculptors who allow people to climb on their sculpture and adapt it. And the day will not only feature the visual arts, we’d also love to see performing artists and writers taking the opportunity to work with people in creative and fun ways.  We’d also like to work with volunteers of all skill sets, to work both behind the scenes in preparation for the event and on the day to welcome, coordinate and encourage others to get involved.

“Ultimately FIGMENT is a catalyst to celebrate creativity and passion, bringing communities together to create, share ideas, think and dream.

“I can’t wait to meet the people who will make FIGMENT Derby a reality and create a day to remember, which will hopefully be the start of something special for so many with a creative spirit.”
