Come and join us at this much loved, annual event where residents and friends of the beautiful Lumsdale Valley get together to raise funds to help maintain the environment and industrial archaeology of this important site. Be part of our exciting new project to protect the remaining ruins in Lumsdale.

ARKWRIGHT SOCIETY LECTURE SERIES: THE LESSER KNOWN HOUSES OF DERBYSHIRE – REVOLUTION HOUSE: A SMALL HOUSE WITH A BIG STORY

Location: Gothic Warehouse (ground floor)

In 1688, three local noblemen, the Earl of Devonshire, the Earl of Danby and Mr John D’Arcy met at Whittington disguised as a hunting party to begin planning their part in the overthrow of James II. A rainstorm sent them seeking shelter to the Cock and Pynot alehouse. It is now known as Revolution House, a free public museum which remains as a memorial to events that changed the history of our nation. This illustrated talk by Peter Hall from Chesterfield Museums gives an insight into the fascinating history of the house.

Four local artists and designers will be showcasing their arts and crafts including handmade wooden pens and pencils, landscape photographs, fine silver and copper jewellery, and beautiful bags.

RULE AND RIOT TOUR

Location: Cromford Mills

What happened if you broke the law in the 18th century, or broke one of the rules working at the mill? Did the punishment always fit the crime? Find out more about law, order and industrial espionage, during Georgian times, and just how strict working at the mills was as we explore the mill and village on this guided tour.

WINDMILL HILL ARCHIVE AND AFTERNOON IN THE COTSWOLDS

Location: Meet at Cromford Mills for coach travel to Windmill Hill and the Cotswolds

Cost: £45 (Limited places, advance booking essential) Priority booking for Arkwright Society members. Public booking opens on Wednesday 15th March.

Taking full advantage of the views that attracted Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839-1898) to this part of Buckinghamshire, The Rothschild Foundation at Windmill Hill on the Waddesdon estate has been conceived as a place to enjoy both art and architecture and its hilltop location is the perfect setting for contemporary art, sculpture and design. On arrival, tea and coffee will be served at Waddesdon Manor then enjoy a guided tour of the new Archive, Reading Room and philanthropic centre at Windmill Hill before spending a free afternoon in the picturesque Cotswold town of Burford.

Children were an essential part of the mill workforce, but what was life like for them growing up working for Sir Richard Arkwright? Discover more about family life, the jobs people did and the risks they took every day. Starting in the mill yard you will also visit Cromford village and see the street where you might have lived if you were one of Arkwright’s workers.

A WALK DOWN THROUGH THE LUMSDALE VALLEY

Location: Meet at the layby opposite Highfields Upper School car park entrance, Upper Lumsdale, DE4 5NA. Please park in Upper Lumsdale and not at the bottom of the Valley.

Cost: £3 – Limited places, advance booking required.

A leisurely guided one mile walk down through this wooded gorge of outstanding natural beauty, exploring the stone mill ruins, ponds and waterfalls that make up this unique historical site. Please note the route down the Valley involves some steep steps and uneven paths which can be muddy and slippery. Please wear suitable footwear with a good grip. Walking poles are also recommended
