Art and Design students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre in the Cathedral Quarter will be staging a pop-up exhibition at Market Hall this Friday and Saturday (March 10 and 11) to showcase their recent work.

The 26 students involved are all part of the Pre-Degree Art Foundation Diploma programme with their sights set on further developing their artistic skills at university this September.

Lecturer Tracey Ramsdale explained: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to hold the exhibition, and give our students the experience of seeing their work in a venue outside  of college.

“The theme of the exhibition is ‘Radical’ and work is inspired by a visit to London in January to see a number of exhibitions at the V&A, Saatchi Gallery and Barbican.

“The students have responded to the theme in very different ways, from fashion made from radical materials to themes such as festivals and music.”

Linda Aston is chair of the Market Hall Traders Association and a member of the Cathedral Quarter management group, which drives forward activities under the area’s business improvement district status.

She said: “The space and natural light in the historic Market Hall makes it the perfect venue for such a project and I am sure that this exhibition will be a real talking point amongst the businesses and visitors.

“The Cathedral Quarter was recently named the best city centre location in the Great British High Street Awards and a large part of that was due to the work undertaken with a wide range of partners to stage a variety of different entertainment and activity – including in the Market Hall.

“Derby College students worked very hard to help us and arts organisation Furthest from the Sea stage the Winter Wonderland here in December and we look forward to this and future projects with students at the College.”
