Derby College Students Shadow Derby Theatre Professionals

Performing Arts students at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre have gained a unique insight into the production process behind Derby Theatre’s successful Christmas show ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

The students, who have their sights set on a wide range of careers in the creative industries, have been shadowing the team including directors, costume and lighting designers, technical stage team and actors throughout the preparation of the production.

The project culminated in the students creating and presenting their own adapted scenes at Derby Theatre.

Level three student Leo Cooke said: “It’s really opened my eyes to the different roles in the process.  Sessions with the different professionals have inspired me to look at design and production as potential career areas that I’m now considering.”

Level two learner Sheryl Leader added: “This has shown me all of the different aspects of theatre.  I know that I definitely want to work in theatre, as everyone we work with loves what they do which makes me want to be a part of that.”

Derby College Performing Arts Lecturer Gaynor Darn said: “This has been an amazing and unique experience for the students who have gained an insight into how a wide range of professionals come together to create a production. “I am sure that it will have inspired them in their career plans whether that is on the stage or behind the scenes and we are extremely grateful to Derby Theatre and the University of Derby for this opportunity.”
