Derby College Students Commended For Volunteer Work

Health and Social Care students at Derby College have been recognised for their voluntary work at Derby’s two hospitals.

Derby Teaching Hospitals held their annual Volunteer Long Service Awards at the Royal Derby Hospital recently where volunteers were recognised for their efforts.

A group of nine Derby College students who are on the Level two and three Health and Social Care programme at the Roundhouse in Derby’s Pride Park, were nominated for the Student Volunteer of the Year award as part of the ceremony.

Second year student Ajsa Bjelobrvic (18) from Derby was presented with the award with her peers highly commended for their work.

They are amongst a group of more than 80 Health and Social Care students at the College who volunteer at the hospitals one or two days a week to gain work experience as well as in other places such as care homes and day centres.

Ajsa is now going on to the University of Nottingham to study Adult Nursing.

She explained: “We work on a variety of wards as part of the Housekeeper team – doing all sorts of jobs including serving meals and helping to make patients more comfortable during their stay in hospital.

“It is good to get work experience at the hospitals – seeing first hand the different work that the staff do and helping to keep the wards running smoothly.

“I was very shocked to be presented with the award but it was great that so many of us were nominated from this course.”

Derby College Team Manager Paula May added: “We constantly gain excellent feedback from the staff at the hospitals and all the healthcare settings where our students volunteer and we are extremely proud of this group who were nominated for this award.

“Work experience is an important part of the Health and Social Care programmes – enabling students to gain important skills and attitudes that they will need in their future careers and helping them to decide the area of work that they want to pursue.”
