Cupcake Day To Raise Money For Dementia Research

Family-owned funeral directors G Wathall & Son will be inviting people to its branches in Derby city centre, Ashbourne, Borrowash and Alvaston on Thursday June 15 to help raise money for research into dementia.

The company is taking part in the Alzeheimer’s Society’s annual Cupcake Day and will be serving tea, coffee and cakes for visitors between 10am and 12 noon with every crumb of money raised going to the UK’s leading dementia charity.

Helen Wathall is Managing Director and fifth generation of the family at G Wathall and Son who won the 2017 Derby Telegraph Business Awards Contribution to the Community category.

She explained: “Dementia is the number one cause of death in England and Wales. It doesn’t discriminate and currently there’s no cure.

“We often come into contact with people suffering Dementia both to put a funeral plan in place for themselves or when arranging the funeral for their husband or wife who have probably been their carer.

“We therefore do as much as we can to support the Alzheimer’s Society and to invest in training for our own staff and fellow professionals in the city and county.

“Many of our team are now part of the Dementia Friends network and we continue to organise regular training that gives an insight into the sensory challenges facing people living with Dementia.

“I hope that we will raise a lot of money on Cupcake Day which will support valuable research into this cruel disorder that has such a devastating effect on so many people’s lives.”
