CQ Saturdays Street Circus Set To Top the Bill in Cathedral Quarter

The Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) has again teamed up with outdoor performance specialists Déda Producing for CQ Saturdays Street Circus which is held on the second Saturday of every month in the run up to Derby Festé in September.

Finnish Circus Artist Tiina Tuomisto will be the headline act for this month’s free CQ Saturdays Street Circus which will be at the Waterfall Stage in the Market Place on Saturday June 13 between 11am and 3pm

Tiina specialises in hula-hoops and hand balancing and will come to the Cathedral Quarter fresh from her appearance in family comedy cabaret ‘Hercules’ at Derby Theatre on Friday June 12.

She began her full time circus education in Finland and continued her studies at The Circus Space in London. Before graduating she created Hoop La La with two friends who have performed their hula-hoop acts across the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

Besides Hoop La La, Tiina performs a solo act having been chosen to compete in international circus festivals. Tiina is also teaching hula-hoops at The Circus Space in London.

Tiina has performed in many high profile events including the India F1 after party, on the same stage as Lady Gaga, on the red carpet with Robert Pattinson, for the Queen at Epsom Derby as part of the Jubilee celebrations and for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Ark charity.

The free event will be compered by Changofuego – a performer with his own special brand of fire juggling, unicycling and comedy.  Also performing an act of comedy, juggling and object manipulation will be Sam Davey.

Stephen Munn is Director of Déda Producing, which is part of regional dance house Déda in Chapel Street, and is the artistic lead of Derby Festé.

He explained: “We are delighted that Tiina will be joining the line-up for CQ Saturdays Street Circus this month.

“Déda has been one of the presenting partners for ‘Hercules’ at Derby Theatre which Tiina will perform in on Friday night and will then amaze the crowds as part of the street entertainment in the Cathedral Quarter.

“Déda is based in the Cathedral Quarter and we are particularly delighted to be working with the Business Improvement District to support its efforts to increase footfall to the area and to local businesses.

“Our aim is to create a Covent Garden feel to the area and a real vibrancy to the streets and CQ Saturdays Street Circus is also the perfect appetiser for Derby Festé which will return to the city this September.”

Martin Langsdale, chair of the Cathedral Quarter Management Group, which drives forward activities under the area’s Business Improvement District status, explained: “We are fortunate to have a number of high quality arts organisations within the Cathedral Quarter including Déda who do a brilliant job organising the CQ Saturdays Street Circus entertainment every month.

“As a BID we are working hard to bring together a wide range of partner organisations to give visitors different reasons to come to the Cathedral Quarter at the weekend – whatever their interests – and then explore the area and visit the businesses here.”

The free CQ Saturdays Street Circus events join an already busy monthly programme of events and entertainment in the area. Information about all the events in the Cathedral Quarter are available at www.derbycathedralquarter.co.uk; on Twitter @DerbyCQ and Facebook CathedralQuarterDerby
