A free programme designed to give support and education to anyone following a bereavement will start again on Wednesday October 26.
The six-week Grief Journey Derby programme is funded by Derby and Ashbourne independent funeral directors G Wathall & Son. The weekly sessions are held between 6pm and 8pm at Derby Rugby Club in Haslam’s Lane and must be pre-booked by contacting G Wathall & Son.
East Midlands orchestra Sinfonia Viva have been awarded £85,057 Children in Need funding to support an extended children’s music outreach programme.
Viva Fever has previously been supported by Children in Need and will continue for a further three years across the region. A group of professional musicians from Viva will regularly visit Rainbows Children’s Hospice, the Children’s Centre at Nottingham City Hospital and children’s wards at Royal Derby Hospital and Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.

The National Tramway Museum wish to commission an artist to design and produce a sculpture to commemorate tramway workers who lived, worked and were affected by the First World War. The Museum is initially inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced sculptors.
Celebrated East Midlands orchestra Sinfonia Viva will be joined by the 2016 Young Musician of the Year – Nottingham’s Sheku Kanneh-Mason for its annual New Year’s Eve Gala Concert at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham.
Cellist Sheku (17) is a Year 13 pupil at Trinity Catholic School and the Royal Academy of Music and won the prestigious annual competition which was held at the Barbican in London in May. Sheku will perform Dvorak’s Rondo for Cello and Orchestra and Saint-Saens’ Swan at the early evening concert, which is under the baton of ‘Mr New Year’s Eve’ Nicholas Kok.
Happy National Poetry Day for Thursday 6th October! There are several poetry events taking place in Derbyshire Libraries over the next week including a celebration of the life and work of Dorothy May Walters-Godfree at Ilkeston Library on Wednesday 5th October. Dorothy was a writer and poet who was born in Ilkeston in 1918 and lived in the town before moving to Bath in 1960. Dorothy, who passed away last year, continued to write poetry throughout her life with poems such as In the Care Home written during her later years. - Ali

Staff at local independent funeral directors G Wathall & Son have raised £297 for Macmillan Cancer Support after holding their own ‘Bake Off’ competition.
Staff across Wathall’s branches in Derby, Ashbourne and Borrowash baked cakes and biscuits at home and then brought them into the head office in Macklin Street to be tasted and judged by managing director Helen Wathall.
