Artcore June 2021 Newsletter

At Artcore Gallery, we are exhibiting "Circling the Square: Visions of an Unmade City" by artists Ryan Heath and Katy Hawkins. The exhibition is an accumulation of what the artists have been working on during their residency with us at Artcore. Coming up in June, we also have a talk by Ryan and Katy, a new exhibition opening of "52 Cameras in 52 Weeks" by Tony Kemplen, and an exciting exhibition at Charnwood St, "Shape Your Future". Keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming events and exhibitions which will be advertised on our website throughout the month. 

Derbyshire Craft Business gets a boost from Theo Paphitis

A Derbyshire based firm has received a business boost from Retail Entrepreneur Theo Paphitis. Last week, Sarah Hodgkinson owner of Crafty You Crafty Me tweeted Theo about her business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by Theo to his near half a million Twitter followers. The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has over 3,000 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK.

Business Award Recognises Local Company’s Lofty Ambitions

A Long Eaton company has been recognised as a leading light in the loft storage industry by a panel of business judges.

More Than Loft Ladders is based in Meadow Lane and covers the Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield areas as part of a national franchise network.

The company has been named Loft Specialists of the Year in the Corporate Livewire Central England Prestige Awards 2021 which recognises small and medium-sized businesses that have proven to be the best in their market over the past 12 months.

Broadcaster urges pause for thought at Buxton

The key to defusing all those blazing internet rows is right there on your computer — and it’s labelled “pause”, says radio presenter and political blogger Iain Dale, who will be urging us all to calm down when he comes to Buxton International Festival in July.

No stranger to taking sides, Iain is not only a former Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, but also a football fan whose West Ham Till I Die blog says it all about tribalism just in its title.

Winner of Derby Children’s Picture Book Award 2021 announced

The winner of the third Derby Children’s Picture Book Award is announced today (28 May) by the organisers of Derby Book Festival.  The winning book, from a shortlist of three, is All Kinds of Families by Sophy Henn, published by Egmont.  The Award aims to celebrate picture books that children can relate to and in which the diversity and challenges of modern life are represented.  

The three shortlisted books were read by pupils in Years 2&3 at eight Derby primary schools in May and the children voted for their favourite on Voting Day, 25 May.  

Matinée: Bringing creativity home

Arts Derbyshire is delighted to support Dementia Action Week 2021 with the launch of the second round of our Matinée Outreach dementia friendly arts project. The project invites those living with dementia and their carers in Derbyshire to take part in a creative adventure over telephone and post with our fabulous team of professional artists. There’s the chance to explore some creative writing, or crafts or visual arts all from the safety and comfort of your own home, and at your own speed.
