Taking action to support mental health

Students at the Derby College Group have been busy raising awareness of mental health issues - while at the same time raising money to support a number of mental health charities.

Over the past few months students across the College have been involved in a number of social action projects that have raised over £800 for charities such as Mind and Man-Up.

Activities include a Traditional Games Day hosted by Chesterfield Museum, nest box making in local parks, special screenings and performances at the Winding Wheel Theatre and the return of the Holiday Club to Queen’s Park Sports Centre.

Community Event Supporting Ukraine

Friday 24th February 2023 marks one year since the invasion of Ukraine. Since then, millions of Ukrainians have been forced to leave their country, with many coming to the UK and some becoming part of Darley Dale’s community. The Whitworth and Darley Dale Town Council are working with MAKE, a local creative group, made up of local residents and those who are new to the country, to mark the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine and show support to Ukrainians in the local area and beyond.

Disability no barrier for site manager, marathon runner and engineering student Jack

Site manager Jack Foster is not letting disability stand in the way of achieving his personal goals.
Jack, 25, has cerebral palsy with an autism element but is currently training for this third marathon while also studying for his civil engineering HNC with Derby College Group. 

He has already raised £2,000 for the national charity Cerebral Palsy Sport in the five years since he took up running, completing the Rutland and Robin Hood marathons.

Businesses in the local area have been urged to consider adopting a charity of the year because it’s as great for their bottom line as for the good cause they support.

Nikki Kinsey, group director at Sellick Partnership recruitment firm on Pride Park, who has many times been named on the Derby Telegraph’s ‘inspirational 250’ list, said businesses should strongly consider adopting a charity of the year to help fulfil their corporate social responsibilities (CSR).

Visit Peak District & Derbyshire promoted the delights of the destination to thousands of consumers and travel trade buyers at three renowned travel events in Dublin and London last week.
