Bursary Awards For Derby College Students

Two Derby College Art & Design students have won bursaries from Arts Society Derby to support their move into Higher Education.

UAL Art Foundation Diploma students Lauren Jones and Georgia Brown have won £400 and £200 respectively after being shortlisted for the annual Bryan Harris Bursary award – named after the Society’s founder and former chairman who died three years ago.

Lauren (19) from Alvaston impressed the judged with her artwork showing the different attitudes to crime in Amsterdam and the UK such as the laws around cannabis and prostitution.

She said: “I was inspired to create these pieces highlighting cultural differences when I visited Amsterdam.

“The planning took more time than the actual creative work but I am really pleased with the results and was over the moon when it was chosen as the Bursary winner.”

Lauren went to Derby College from Derby Moor Academy, initially on a Level two Art & Design programme, and has progressed through to the Foundation course over four years. She has has secured a place to study Fine Art at the University of Sheffield.

Georgia (19) from Somercotes created a board game entitled ‘Escape from Mars’ which was inspired by the Matt Damon film ‘The Martian’ – with players able to win different items to ensure their survival on the planet.

Georgia studied A levels at Swanwick Hall School and is now going to the University of Lincoln to study Graphic Design.

Members of Arts Society Derby judged entries from five students at the Joseph Wright Campus Art and Design Faculty.

Vikki Fitt, Young Arts representative at Arts Society Derby, said: “We have awarded a bursary every year for more than 20 years to a Derby College student to support them in their University studies.

“We were particularly impressed with the students’ creative interpretation of their subjects and we wish them all the best of luck in their future studies.”
