Bursary Awards For Derby College Group Students

Three Derby College Group (DCG) Art & Design students have won bursaries from Arts Society Derby to support their move into Higher Education.

UAL Art Foundation Diploma student Grace Hamilton has won £400 and £100 has been awarded each to Chloe Burton and Zainab Hussein.

Members of Arts Society Derby judged entries from five students at the Joseph Wright post-16 Academic and Arts College after they were shortlisted for the annual Bryan Harris Bursary award – named after the Society’s founder and former chairman who died four years ago.

Grace (19) from Derby impressed the judged with paintings of her siblings – celebrating natural hair.

She said: “I wanted to celebrate just how beautiful natural hair and that it is part of our individual identifies.  The pieces took about four weeks of solid work.

“I was very surprised but delighted to have won the bursary.  It will certainly help to buy materials for my Fine Art degree course at De Montfort University.”

Chloe (18) from Swanwick created a multi media piece challenging people to break from routine and Zainab (19) from Derby created a collection of reptilian Fabergé eggs.

Vikki Fitt, Young Arts representative at Arts Society Derby, said: “We have awarded a bursary every year for more than 20 years to a Derby College student to support them in their University studies.

“The standard was particularly high this year so we decided to divide the second place bursary between two of the students.

“We wish them all the best of luck in their future studies.”
