April Young's Exhibition in Sadler Gate

April Young's Exhibition in Sadler Gate

Since opening the gallery and studios to the public in December 2016, April Young has been developing this body of work which examines our relationship with the natural world.

Through direct experience painting in familiar and much loved places including Calke Abbey and Elvaston Castle, as well as a scholarly devotion to the emotive reactions depicted in literature and folklore, her new work is as approachable and charming as ever: full of intrigue, energy and life.

Natural Selection is an exhibition of April Young’s new paintings, drawings and sculptures, which take the viewer through the artist’s relationship to flora and fauna. The exhibition both catalogues and reveals how, in the process of filtering observable reality through the artist’s contemporary understanding of literature, folklore and personal narratives, a finished artwork comes about.

With sources as diverse as the poetry of Yeats,  film stills from Channel 4’s 'Electric Dreams', and Joni Mitchell lyrics, it’s fun to follow the artist’s wandering mind through this collection of work, which is evocative, and as familiar as it is beautifully strange.
