MEMBER: Rachel Carter Sculpture
I am a Derbyshire born artist, living on the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire for most of my life. Since completing BA Hons Applied Art in 2007 at the University of Derby, I have practiced as a professional artist and undertaken commissions and exhibitions on a local, regional and national level.
In 2012 I was selected by Yorkshire Sculpture Park to show my hand woven work alongside Jaume Plensa in the Kyiv Botanical Gardens, Ukraine, an achievement I am very proud of.
My sculptural work often features abstract fluid or geometric shapes that take inspiration from the patterns found in nature. With each sculpture I apply hand weaving techniques such as macrame and crochet to various materials such as wax, wire, paper and cord. Changing materials but applying the same process to it can vastly change the outcome, and it is this play with shape, form and texture that holds a particular interest.
Each new body of work allows further experimentation and development applying the woven form to various bronze casting processes within the direct lost wax method, with some casting techniques being thousands of years old.
The combination of hand process and casting allow me to create woven sculptures that will be forever preserved in bronze.
