MEMBER: Cromford Mills
The Arkwright Society is a registered charity concerned with education and the conservation of industrial heritage. The charity owns and manages Cromford Mills which has been described as the most important textile heritage site in the world. It was here that Sir Richard Arkwright built the world's first successful water powered cotton spinning mills, changing cotton production and manufacturing forever.
Following 50 years of dilapidation the site has been rescued by the Arkwright Society which saved it from demolition and secured World Heritage status. The Arkwright Society's key objective is to regenerate the site and its Grade 1 listed mills by creating sustainable new uses that contribute positively to the local environment and economy.
The Arkwright Society relies on fundraising and its own income generation as it continues to maintain, manage and restore Cromford Mills.
