The Head Wrap Diaries by Uchenna Dance

Dance/Theatre
The Head Wrap Dairies is a dance theatre production that uses comedy, movement, and music, to explore women, beauty, hair, and culture. Weaving good humoured storytelling with beautifully physical African traditional and contemporary dance, the piece is set to a sizzling soundtrack of R’n’B and Ghanaian pop music. If you come prepared for a lecture, prepare to be disappointed. If you come for a party, prepare to get one!

Told through the stories of three feisty, and very different, female dancers playing several characters, we explore community, heritage, womanhood, and friendship, and celebrate versatility and diversity.
This is a noisy, colourful show that will transform the Glebe into a hair salon, and give us front row seats as we watch, interact with, and join a journey, that takes us from childhood to the present day.

It’s a great opportunity to learn about the huge commitment made in looking after afro hair (like wishing you had long blonde hair or having a relaxer burn your scalp at least once in your life). But it’s also a celebration of the way all/(some!) of us put a lot of effort into our hair care, wherever in the world we live. Anyone who sees the show will recognise the Mum almost pulling out the hair of the child as she tries to tame it; the immaculate picture-perfect Instagram generation getting ready for their selfie; and the grannies who are there, really, only to catch up on gossip.

The show explores the world-wide similarities of what happens at the hairdressers: the weird ritual of placing yourself completely at someone’s mercy; the strange chats you have; the salon scandals; and that terrifying stylist you daren’t disagree with, even if they’ve ruined your hair!

The experience doesn’t start and stop on the stage. There will be a pre-show multi-sensory installation, designed by students of Central St Martins, to enjoy as you walk into the hall. After the show, you’ll be able to visit the Head Wrap Bar when the brave among us can try out a new look with the help of the performers! We will be able to share our thoughts and questions with the company, and learn different ways of tying head wraps.

Here is a work that is engaging, authentic, culturally rooted, and beautifully danced.

A Live & Local show suitable for those aged 12 and over.
