BUTTERFLY CRY: THE STORY OF FRIDA KAHLO PORTRAITS AND WEST END GIRLS WITH CHRIST OF ST JOHN BY ARTIST JOHN MCDONALD
BANKS MILL STUDIOS
Monday 16 April to Friday 18 May 2018
Launch event: Friday 20 April 6.00pm – 8.30pm
Butterfly Cry is a story of love and loss, suffering and strength, and of the right to dare anything. It is the story of the making of an artist.
Come to Banks Mill and enjoy a range of paintings which is refreshing, exciting, colourful and accessible. From stunning large-scale portraits to intimate interiors, the passion and pathos of this work is hard not to succumb to.
Showcasing Butterfly Cry, a series of portraits of Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo.
Introducing West End Girls: a collaboration which links heritage, history and the University of Derby, through the stories of some of the inspirational women of Derby's West End.
Featuring the Christ of St Johns, after Salvador Dali, including The Big Yins as seen on BBC Arts.
An outsider artist whose practice is the key to survival and relationship, following 17 years of profound deafness, John’s work declares:
I’ve come through my Dark Dark Dark period
And it’s my painting that’s bringing me Light

The artist will be working live for much of the exhibition. If you want to watch, or talk, or learn to paint this is a fantastic opportunity.
The Big Yins appears with kind permission from photographer James Stenson, and Highland Scullery appears with kind permission from photographer and former Buzzcocks drummer John Maher.
